A former Indonesian general turned senior intelligence agent ordered the murder of the country's leading human rights activist in revenge for the latter ruining his military career, prosecutors claimed yesterday at the start of the retired spy chief's trial garuda-indonesia-uk-jobs-rid-82889.html. marche orologi uomo eleganti.
Muchdi Purwoprandjono orchestrated the death of Munir Thalib on a KLM airliner from Singapore to Amsterdam on September 7 2004 because Mr Munir exposed human rights abuses committed by Indonesia's special forces while Mr Muchdi commanded the unit, according to the indictment read out in a Jakarta court.
The trial has become a barometer of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's oft-stated commitment to upholding human rights and ending decades of elite impunity. Mr Yudhoyono faces re-election next year.
Mr Muchdi, who could be executed if convicted, is the first two-star general ever to be detained and tried in a civilian court. Another major-general, Adam Damiri, was tried and eventually acquitted by Indonesia's widely criticised special tribunal for East Timor.
Mr Yudhoyono has been widely criticised for not acting more swiftly to uncover those responsible for killing Munir, who died of arsenic poisoning on the flight to the Netherlands.
Pollycarpus Priyanto, then a Garuda Indonesia pilot and freelance intelligence agent, has been imprisoned for 20 years for his involvement in the murder and two Garuda executives have been convicted of falsifying letters for Pollycarpus.
Cirus Sinaga, the leader prosecutor in the Muchdi trial, said the retired major-general hatched the plot against Munir "to satisfy his feelings of hatred, anger and revenge towards the victim".
Munir, who led the Commission for Missing People and Victims of Violence (Kontras), a non-governmental organisation, exposed the special forces' kidnapping of 13 student activists in 1997-98.
Mr Muchdi commanded the unit in 1998 and was fired after 52 days but never prosecuted. He was ap-pointed a deputy intelligence chief in 2003.
Rights activists see the trial as a positive development both in the Munir case and in the larger battle against impunity but say the authorities need to go further. Usman Hamid, head of Kontras, Indonesia's human rights group, member of the state-appointed independent fact-finding team into the Munir case, said: "I'm not satisfied with the prosecutors' indictment. Our team concluded the crime was a high-level political conspiracy, not a personal vendetta. The authorities cannot stop with Muchdi."
Mr Muchdi, who denies the allegations but has yet to plea formally, told the court that the indictment "is far from the truth". *Habib Rizeq, the head of the radical Indonesian group the Islamic Defenders Front, went on trial yesterday charged with spreading hatred and inciting his followers to attack a peaceful interfaith rally in Jakarta in which dozens of people were injured.
Mr Habib, who denies the charges, faces up to nine years if convicted. His 10-year-old organisation is known for its vigilante attacks on institutions they consider un-Islamic. Related Topics Terrorism

Find the cheapest month to travel from London to Jakarta
This information is correct as of May 2016 Airlines that fly from London to Jakarta Garuda Indonesia fly direct from London-Heathrow to Jakarta-Soekarno-Hatta. This is currently the only available flight from London to Jakarta. Terminal Information – Departing This is only a guideline. Always check your boarding pass for up-to-date terminal information. Garuda Indonesia flights depart from Heathrow Airport  terminal 3. You can reach this terminal by train (the Heathrow Express stops here) as well as by underground (Piccadilly Line). The departure lounge has a good range of designer shops such as Cath Kidstson, Chanel, Gucci and Harrods.  Places to eat include Bridge Lounge & Dining, Costa and the Oyster Bar. There's a Servisair Lounge and a No.1 Traveller Lounge in terminal 3: both can be used by travellers on all airlines. You can pre-book your lounge access online or pay on the door. Terminal Information – Arriving Jakarta-Soekarno-Hatta Airport is about 12 miles from the city centre. Garuda Indonesia flights usually land at terminal 2. There's a free shuttle bus available between the airport terminals. Taxis are available: it's best to go to the counters inside the terminal. They'll take you straight to the head of the queue and you can avoid the touts that linger in the arrivals hall. Ask the driver to turn on the meter: if they quote you a fixed rate it's likely to be inflated. The DAMRI shuttle bus leaves from all terminals and is a slightly cheaper (more authentic) option for reaching downtown Jakarta. Shuttle buses are also available. Practical Information If you're visiting Indonesia for 30 days or less you can enter without a visa. If you're visiting for reasons other than tourism (including visiting family) you will need to apply for a visa before you go. Your passport needs to be valid for a full six months after your date of departure from Indonesia. You may be asked to show proof of onward travel by immigration, so we recommend booking all flights before leaving for Jakarta. For long-haul flights we recommend arriving at the airport at least two and a half hours before departure. What to expect in Jakarta Jakarta is six hours ahead of London. The currency is the Indonesian Rupiah. Prices in Jakarta are extremely budget friendly. Dinner for two costs about £11* on average, while a pint of local beer is just £1.50*. Getting around is inexpensive too, with a 5km taxi journey costing about £1.40* on average. Temperatures in Jakarta tend to sit around 29°C all year round. The wet season lasts from October to May: January is the wettest month. June to September is considered the dry season, although there's still a chance of showers. *Prices subject to change
