Ex-military chief accused in Garuda murder plot
By John Aglionby and Taufan Hidayat in Jakarta
A former Indonesian general turned senior intelligence agent ordered the murder of the country's leading human rights activist in revenge for the latter ruining his military career, prosecutors claimed yesterday at the start of the retired spy chief's trial garuda-indonesia-uk-jobs-rid-82889.html. marche orologi uomo eleganti.
Muchdi Purwoprandjono orchestrated the death of Munir Thalib on a KLM airliner from Singapore to Amsterdam on September 7 2004 because Mr Munir exposed human rights abuses committed by Indonesia's special forces while Mr Muchdi commanded the unit, according to the indictment read out in a Jakarta court.
The trial has become a barometer of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's oft-stated commitment to upholding human rights and ending decades of elite impunity. Mr Yudhoyono faces re-election next year.
Mr Muchdi, who could be executed if convicted, is the first two-star general ever to be detained and tried in a civilian court. Another major-general, Adam Damiri, was tried and eventually acquitted by Indonesia's widely criticised special tribunal for East Timor.
Mr Yudhoyono has been widely criticised for not acting more swiftly to uncover those responsible for killing Munir, who died of arsenic poisoning on the flight to the Netherlands.
Pollycarpus Priyanto, then a Garuda Indonesia pilot and freelance intelligence agent, has been imprisoned for 20 years for his involvement in the murder and two Garuda executives have been convicted of falsifying letters for Pollycarpus.
Cirus Sinaga, the leader prosecutor in the Muchdi trial, said the retired major-general hatched the plot against Munir "to satisfy his feelings of hatred, anger and revenge towards the victim".
Munir, who led the Commission for Missing People and Victims of Violence (Kontras), a non-governmental organisation, exposed the special forces' kidnapping of 13 student activists in 1997-98.
Mr Muchdi commanded the unit in 1998 and was fired after 52 days but never prosecuted. He was ap-pointed a deputy intelligence chief in 2003.
Rights activists see the trial as a positive development both in the Munir case and in the larger battle against impunity but say the authorities need to go further. Usman Hamid, head of Kontras, Indonesia's human rights group, member of the state-appointed independent fact-finding team into the Munir case, said: "I'm not satisfied with the prosecutors' indictment. Our team concluded the crime was a high-level political conspiracy, not a personal vendetta. The authorities cannot stop with Muchdi."
Mr Muchdi, who denies the allegations but has yet to plea formally, told the court that the indictment "is far from the truth". *Habib Rizeq, the head of the radical Indonesian group the Islamic Defenders Front, went on trial yesterday charged with spreading hatred and inciting his followers to attack a peaceful interfaith rally in Jakarta in which dozens of people were injured.
Mr Habib, who denies the charges, faces up to nine years if convicted. His 10-year-old organisation is known for its vigilante attacks on institutions they consider un-Islamic. Related Topics Terrorism
